The coffee rabbit hole
It starts with grinding your own and ends with a descaling schedule. Roughly in order.
Nobody sets out to own a descaling kit. The route there is made of individually sensible steps, each one solving the problem the last step revealed. Here is that route, roughly in the order most people walk it.
It usually starts with grinding, because that is the cheapest change that alters what is in the cup. A hand grinder takes a couple of minutes of turning and no electricity, and the first cup afterwards is the moment the whole thing becomes a hobby rather than a routine.

The second stage is admitting you will not do that before work. An electric grinder removes the one step most likely to be skipped on a Tuesday, and consistency is what makes the rest of the setup worth having at all.

Then the machine, and the fork in the road. A lever machine gives you the pressure to control yourself, which means worse coffee for a fortnight and better coffee after that. People who enjoy the process stop here and never move on.

The other branch is the one that admits mornings are not a hobby. A bean-to-cup machine grinds, doses and brews behind a closed lid, and asks nothing of you before you are awake. It is the least romantic option on this list and the one most likely to still be used in a year.

Whichever branch you take, the destination is the same and nobody puts it on the box. A maintenance kit is what keeps any of this working past the first year, because the enemy of every machine here is limescale rather than wear. Buying one is the point at which the hobby has you.

More in this corner under espressomachine and koffiemolen. The rest of the week is in the daily.
