Somewhere to read

A reading nook is mostly a lie you tell yourself about a chair, until the light and the book and the charger all cooperate at once. Here's what's involved in that cooperation, none of it glamorous, all of it necessary.

For the kid whose bedroom already runs on a different logic, the Minecraft Allay desk lamp does double duty as a nightlight and as unmistakable proof of allegiance. It won't help you read Tolstoy, but nobody buying it was planning to.

The Govee smart floor lamp stands 160cm tall and splits into three heads, so you can point light at a book, a plant, and a ceiling simultaneously, then argue with a phone app about which shade of white you actually meant. It's a leeslamp in the loosest possible sense, and a mood lamp in the strictest one.

An e-reader nook doesn't need much, but it does need power that outlasts the reading. The Xtorm Fuel Series 5 powerbank holds 10.000 mAh, carries both USB-C and USB-A out, and is made from recycled material for anyone whose corner of comfort still has to answer to a conscience.

At the center of this arrangement, or at least the excuse for it, sits the Kobo Clara Colour. Six inches of color screen, 16GB inside, and audiobook support for the nights when even holding a book feels like a commitment.

Not every reading nook is a book nook. Some are a laptop balanced on a knee at 1am, in which case the CoolCold laptop cooler earns its keep with an adjustable stand, a cooling pad built for 15.6 to 17 inch machines, and a phone holder for the second screen nobody admits to needing.

And for the desk that has to do everything, work, reading, the occasional existential pause, the Sounix LED desk lamp offers a remote, five light stands, and five brightness levels, which is either excessive or exactly right depending on how particular you are about 9pm versus 9:15pm light.
