The cosiest Christmas markets in Europe in 2026
The 2026 dates of some sixty Christmas markets across Europe, from Brussels and Cologne to Vienna, Prague and Tallinn, and what the stalls sell: carved wood, blown glass, candles, mulled wine, tree decorations and everything it takes to stay warm.
Checked 2026-09-21
Christmas markets do not all open at once. The German ones often start in mid or late November and close before Christmas Eve, the big Belgian ones run on past New Year, and a few Dutch ones last a single weekend. Anybody hoping to see more than one needs a list of dates more than a list of the prettiest towns.
The dates come first, country by country, for the major markets across Europe. After them comes what the stalls sell: carved wood, blown glass, candles, food and drink, decorations for the tree, and what it takes to stay warm for a whole evening outdoors. For each, there is something to find at home, for anybody not making it to Nuremberg.
How to read the tables. The dates are for the 2026 season, checked against the organisers in mid-September 2026. Where a row says "not yet announced", the city had not published its dates and the last column gives last year's: they show the rhythm of the market, not the exact day.

Made by hand. A good share of what market stalls sell is made by the person behind the counter: carved wood from the Ore Mountains in Saxony, blown glass from Thuringia, candles dipped on the spot, felt, lace, painted clay. The Saxon stalls are the easiest to recognise, with their spinning candle pyramids, arched candle bridges and nutcrackers in uniform. You cannot order the stall, but you can order the kit and make your own.
A quilted Christmas tree kit is a three-dimensional fabric patchwork project, instructions included, that ends as the kind of ornament a craft stall would sell. It takes an evening or two, which is part of the point. More craft kits.

A candle-making kit has what you need to pour your own, and a candle somebody made says something a bought one does not. More craft kits.

Provence has its santons, small painted clay figures that grow year by year into whole villages, and Naples has a street given over to crib workshops all year round. Alessi's Bark Crib is the design-shop take on the same idea, in white. More nativity scenes.

At many German markets you pay a deposit on the mug your mulled wine comes in, and each market has its own design every year, so anybody who keeps the mug instead of returning it has started a collection without meaning to.
Mulled wine is the smell of every market, and not everybody wants it. Pukka's tea advent calendar has 24 organic herbal teas, one a day, for the evenings between market visits. More tea.

If you have finished vacuuming needles in February, a 180-centimetre Alpine spruce from Royal Christmas has three-dimensional branch tips and goes back in its box in January. More artificial trees.

Christmas markets are outdoors, in the evening, in December, and you spend most of the time standing still: in a queue, at a stall, around a standing table. That is colder than walking, and it is the part people underestimate. A hat, wool socks and gloves matter more than the coat.
A cherry-stone cushion goes in the microwave for a minute and then into a lap on the train home, a cold bed, or the small of a back that stood too long. More heat cushions.
