Moving indoors
The garden hose gets coiled up, the car sits under a tarp more often than not, and the house becomes the whole project for the next few months. What follows is less a theme than a shrug in six directions: things that make sense once you're spending more time under a roof than under a sky.
There's a final outdoor task before the retreat indoors properly begins, and it usually involves a bucket. This large car wash sponge is the kind of thing you buy once and then find every autumn, slightly flatter than it used to be, tucked behind the salt bags in the garage.

Fidgeting is a winter sport now, done at desks instead of bus stops. The oversized butter stick squishy does nothing except get squeezed, slowly, by someone who is supposedly concentrating on something else.

For the smaller members of the household who have also moved their entire operation indoors, Little Dutch's farm-themed activity spiral gives fingers something to spin and slide while the actual farm outside gets rained on.

Kitchens work harder once everyone's eating in more often, which is a polite way of saying the washing up multiplies. A pack of large cotton dish cloths is not an exciting purchase, just a necessary one, heavy duty enough to survive the season.

Indoor projects surface too, the ones postponed all summer because the shed was more appealing than the toolbox. A chrome vanadium breaker bar exists for the bolt that has rusted itself shut since spring and is not moving without leverage.

And for the stretch of dark afternoons spent at a screen rather than a garden, this 32GB DDR4 RAM kit is the sort of quiet upgrade that makes the laptop feel less like it's also dreading the cold.
