The one who walks

Anybody who walks regularly has a relationship with luggage the rest of us do not. Every item comes because it has earned its place, and anything that has disappointed once stays home. That makes this persona easy and mean at the same time: they know exactly what they want, and they replace nothing until it breaks.

Which is the opening. A thermos that is still hot after six hours is the difference between a break and a brief stop, and almost everybody is carrying one that has stopped doing it.

The hiking backpack is the large purchase and also the riskiest, because fit is personal. What is safe is the layer underneath. A torch that goes on a head is used on every walk in November and none in June, which is what stops people buying one.

And then the things that have nothing to do with walking and belong anyway. binoculars turn a walk into something you stop for. A sleeping bag is for the group that does not leave it at a day.
