The one who makes things

The one who makes things has a kitchen table under a project, and the project is going well. What you give is a kit that is an afternoon, not a commitment, and that ends with something on a shelf.

A woodwork set has real tools, soft wood and a plan, and by teatime there is a thing to show for it. The thing will be uneven. That is what makes it theirs. Compare more craft kits.

A large craft box is paper, stickers, glue and a theme in one box, which is a whole afternoon with no trip to the shop halfway through. Compare more craft paper.

A plaster-casting kit is pour, wait, paint. The waiting is the lesson, and the painting is the reward for having learned it. Compare more hobby kits.

A jewellery-making set is beads, cord and clasps. The bracelets come out in a row, and half of them get given away before the afternoon is over. Compare more construction toys.

A paper-flower kit makes flowers that do not wilt, on a rainy afternoon, for a vase that is already in the cupboard. Compare more hobby kits.

And a beaded plant kit: a plant made of beads, wire and patience, and the one that finally survives the windowsill. Compare more hobby kits.

A hammer-and-nail picture board is cork, pins, shapes and a small hammer. It is the oldest craft toy there is, and still the loudest, which the giver should know before the parent does. Compare more craft kits.

And a casting-and-painting owl: one figure, one brush, and a shelf to put it on. Small enough to finish, which is the difference between a kit and a cupboard full of them. Compare more craft kits.
