The one who cooks

Someone who starts chopping on Sunday afternoon and is not finished until the evening.

The person who cooks for other people is easy to buy for and easy to get wrong, and the failure mode is always the same: a gadget that does one thing. It goes in the drawer with the others.

What actually gets used is dull to look at and hard to justify buying for yourself. A knife that holds an edge is the single object in a kitchen that changes how an evening goes, and almost nobody replaces one until it is genuinely blunt.

The same is true one size up. A heavy pan is a twenty-year object that people keep putting off, and it is the difference between something browning and something steaming in its own water. A pot large enough for the batch they actually cook, rather than the batch the pot allows.

Then the unglamorous half. A cutting board big enough that things stop falling off it. The utensil that lives next to the hob because it is the one they reach for.

Below, from the large things to the small. In this kitchen the small things are the ones that get used daily.
