The Person and Work of The Holy Spirit (Annotated)

R. A. Torrey's The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit is a lucid evangelical treatise on the identity, divinity, personality, and operations of the Holy Spirit in Christian life and doctrine. Written in a direct, exegetical style, the book gathers biblical texts into systematic argument, reflecting the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century holiness, revivalist, and fundamentalist concern for conversion, sanctification, spiritual power, and doctrinal clarity. Torrey presents the Spirit not as an abstract influence but as a personal divine agent who convicts, regenerates, indwells, teaches, empowers, and guides believers. Torrey, an American evangelist, pastor, educator, and close associate of Dwight L. Moody, brought to this work the practical urgency of revival preaching and the disciplined habits of a Bible institute teacher. As superintendent of Moody Bible Institute and later a prominent figure in conservative Protestant education, he wrote for readers seeking both theological certainty and experiential vitality. His emphasis on Spirit-filled service reflects his wider ministry of evangelism and biblical instruction. This book is recommended for readers interested in classic evangelical pneumatology, devotional theology, and the historical roots of modern Protestant spirituality. Though shaped by its era, it remains valuable for its scriptural focus, pastoral seriousness, and insistence that Christian doctrine must issue in transformed life and effective service.
