Elsie And Her Namesakes

At Woodburn, the Elsie family gathers in the warm bustle of Grace and Harold's approaching wedding, planning gifts, winter travel, and a stay at Viamede that will keep the newlyweds safe from the cold. Amid the affectionate household scenes, Grandma Elsie turns the children's attention to history, offering Ned, Mary, and the others lessons that blend moral instruction, patriotism, and tenderness. Her storytelling moves from George Washington's youth and Braddock's fatal campaign to the larger sweep of American history, where courage, providence, and sacrifice shape the nation's future. The narrative widens further into vivid frontier and state histories, recounting the Creek War in Alabama, the destruction of Fort Mimms, the battles of Talladega, Autossee, and Horseshoe Bend, and Alabama's swift growth, secession, Civil War suffering, and return to national loyalty. A new lesson on Mississippi follows, tracing early exploration, French settlement, and the Natchez attack on Fort Rosalie, before turning to Bienville's harsh retaliation with Chickasaw aid. Throughout, family devotion, Christian refinement, and the costs of war are woven together with tenderness and pride. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
