The Cloud-Men of Yamato

"The Cloud-Men of Yamato" provides an insightful survey of mysticism as it manifests throughout the long history of Japanese literature. Author E. V. Gatenby examines the spiritual and philosophical undercurrents that have shaped the Japanese literary consciousness, focusing particularly on the elusive "Cloud-Men"-the hermits, sages, and artists who withdrew from society to find truth in the natural world. This work bridges the gap between literary criticism and religious history, offering a thematic outline of how the search for the absolute has been expressed through poetry, prose, and drama. The text explores various stages of development, from the ancient traditions of the Yamato period to the profound influence of Zen Buddhism on later aesthetic movements. Gatenby identifies the recurring themes of nature worship, the impermanence of life, and the pursuit of internal peace, illustrating how these mystical elements are woven into the very fabric of Japanese art. By highlighting specific works and historical figures, "The Cloud-Men of Yamato" illuminates the unique ways in which Japanese writers have sought to capture the ineffable. This volume is an invaluable resource for students of Asian literature, religious scholars, and anyone captivated by the spiritual depth of the Far East. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
