The Story of Sweden-The Swedish Empire

The Swedish Empire: Power, War, and Expansion in the Baltic by Adrian E. Markham explores the remarkable rise of Sweden from a northern kingdom on the edge of Europe to one of the continent's leading military and political powers. From the forests and ironworks of central Sweden to the fortified ports of Riga, Narva, and Stralsund, the book follows the creation of an empire that transformed the Baltic Sea into the center of Swedish ambition. Markham examines the reigns of Gustavus Adolphus, Queen Christina, Charles X Gustav, and Charles XI, tracing the development of a disciplined army, an innovative system of government, and a powerful navy that reshaped the balance of power in northern Europe. As Sweden expanded across the Baltic, it forged an empire built on administration, commerce, military reform, and control of vital trade routes linking Scandinavia with Germany, Poland, and Russia. Drawing on royal records, diplomatic correspondence, military documents, and contemporary accounts, The Swedish Empire reveals how a relatively small kingdom achieved extraordinary influence during the seventeenth century. It offers a vivid and carefully grounded portrait of the people, institutions, and ambitions that created one of Europe's most remarkable early modern empires, while exploring the lasting legacy it left across the Baltic world.
