I'll Take My Stand

"I'll Take My Stand: The South and the Agrarian Tradition" is a seminal collection of essays written by a group of influential writers and thinkers known as the Twelve Southerners. This work serves as a foundational manifesto for Southern Agrarianism, offering a pointed critique of the rapid industrialization and urban progress that transformed the United States in the early twentieth century. Through various perspectives, the contributors argue for the preservation of a traditional, agrarian way of life, which they believe fosters a deeper connection to the land, community, and cultural heritage than the mechanization of modern society. The essays within "I'll Take My Stand: The South and the Agrarian Tradition" explore the tensions between regional identity and national uniformity, advocating for a social order rooted in agriculture rather than industry. By examining the history, economics, and literature of the American South, the authors present a defense of southern culture and a philosophical challenge to the prevailing ideals of industrial capitalism. This collection remains a significant piece of American intellectual history, reflecting a unique moment of regionalist resistance and a profound exploration of the relationship between human values and economic systems. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
