Over dit product
Of all the world's tea companies, Dilmah most resembles an underdog film. Its founder, Merrill J. Fernando, was less an entrepreneur than a Don Quixote — over thirty-eight years he went from tea taster to founder of one of the world's ten largest tea brands, not to make money, but to "take tea back from the multinationals and return it to the growers." But the film does not end as a comedy. Dilmah's FY2025 accounts show revenue of LKR 21.16 bn, exports at 91% of the total, and a presence in 111 countries — on the face of it, success. Pull the camera back, however, and you see Sri Lanka's economic collapse in 2022, two consecutive years of GDP contraction in 2022–2023, and Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025: a national tea industry caught in a three-way squeeze between sovereign debt, climate crisis and geopolitics. Dilmah rewrote the distribution of profit inside its own firm through vertical integration, but it could not rewrite the structural constraints of the industry. Its "smallness" is precisely its "beauty" — and also its "fragility." The respect due to a family firm that resisted the logic of capital for forty years comes with a hard corollary: when the national fortune capsizes, no company saves itself alone.
