The Ideal Ordeal

Fourteen years ago, something terrible happened at Bellmere. Mara Bell remembers almost nothing about that night. She remembers fear. Blood. A little girl named Elena. And a promise she can no longer remember making. Everyone told Mara the same story: Elena disappeared, Anna was killed, and Mara was one of the few people who survived what happened at Bellmere. For fourteen years, she believed them. Then a photograph appears. A photograph of Mara, Elena, and Anna together, taken on the night they were supposed to have vanished from one another's lives. As buried evidence begins to surface, Mara discovers that Elena may still be alive. Old photographs, forgotten recordings, hidden rooms, and people who have spent years protecting the truth begin to pull apart everything she thought she knew about her past. But the closer Mara gets to Elena, the more disturbing the questions become. Why did Elena fear her? Why did Anna disappear? Why does Mara recognize handwriting she cannot remember writing? And why do the people who know the truth seem more afraid of Mara remembering than of what she might discover? Mara has spent fourteen years believing she was the victim. Now she must confront the possibility that the truth is far more complicated. Because sometimes the most dangerous secrets are not the ones someone hides from you. They are the ones you hide from yourself.
