The Ramayana Character Library 2887 - The Ikshvaku Line

Before Rama was an avatar, he was a prince of the Ikshvaku line—a dynasty that traced its origin to the sun itself. This book traces the lives and reigns of the kings who came before him: Manu, the first lawgiver; Sagara, whose pride carved the ocean; Bhagiratha, who brought the Ganga to earth through relentless penance; and Dasharatha, the father whose every choice shaped his son's exile. Across Valmiki's epic, Kamban's Tamil retelling, Tulsidas's devotional verses, and Jain and Southeast Asian traditions, the Ikshvaku kings appear not as mere ancestors but as figures who defined royal dharma and its costs. This volume explores their individual stories, the burdens they carried, and the legacy they passed to Rama—a throne heavy with expectation. For readers who wish to understand Rama fully, knowing his ancestors is essential. Part of The Ramayana Character Library.
