The Glow-Worm and Other Beetles

The Glow-Worm and Other Beetles is a collection of detailed observations and reflections on various beetle species, with a particular focus on glow-worms and their unique luminescence. As with Jean-Henri Fabre's other works, this book combines scientific research with poetic narrative, giving readers both a thorough understanding of insect behavior and an appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. The titular glow-worm is one of the main focuses of the book. Fabre explores the biological and chemical mechanisms behind the glow-worm's light production, a phenomenon known as bioluminescence. He examines the glow-worm’s purpose in emitting light, noting its role in attracting mates and potentially deterring predators. Fabre’s fascination with this "living lamp" leads him to ponder the evolutionary advantages of bioluminescence and how such delicate creatures use this ability for survival and reproduction.
