Inconvenient Sacrifices is a historical novel set in Visigothic Gaul in 444 CE, centred on Signy Wealda and her husband Geseric, the newly appointed Count of Agininum, as personal, political and civic crises converge around them. While Geseric struggles to prove himself, a series of calculated acts of sabotage suggests someone is deliberately trying to undermine his authority and exploit suspicions surrounding Signy's foreign origins and hidden ownership of the town's vital mill. Against a backdrop of court intrigue in Tolosa, resentments within Visigothic noble families, and tensions between Roman and Gothic power, Signy uses her intelligence, resilience and network of allies to search for the pattern behind the attacks, as Geseric confronts the problems of leadership in a society where private grudges, political ambition and public survival are dangerously entangled.
