Chushingura

Chushingura, or The Treasury of Loyal Retainers, brings to life Japan's most celebrated tale of loyalty and revenge, the Ako vendetta, in an eleven-act drama that includes the famous Bridal Journey episode. This edition is introduced as a fuller translation, while acknowledging how difficult it is to carry the play's poetic language, wordplay, and musical joruri style into English. Beneath its graceful surfaces lies a world shaped by Tokugawa-era custom, feudal honor, and the uncompromising demands of duty. Meanwhile, Okaru waits in anxious dignity, her household shadowed by hardship and unspoken burdens, as the story moves toward the next decisive turn.
