The Poems Of Ossian

Before Romanticism had a name, Ossian sang. The mists rise; heroes answer.James MacPherson's The Poems of Ossian gathers the famous cycle of epic narrative poetry that stirred eighteenth century Europe with its windswept melancholy and martial splendour. Presented as a classic poetry collection of complete epic poems, these bardic visions draw on celtic heroic legends and scottish highlands mythology: clan loyalties, ancestral memory, the stark beauty of moor and glen, and the shadow of loss after victory. The language moves between hymn-like solemnity and swift battle music, making it as gripping for a fireside read as it is rewarding for poetry for academic study. Students will find a touchstone for the classic literature curriculum, while collectors will prize the book as a landmark of celtic imagination in English letters, and a gateway into scottish highlands mythology for readers seeking epic feeling in lyric.Few works sit so squarely at the hinge of literary history. Ossian helped shape pre-romantic british poetry and fed the romanticism celtic revival, influencing taste for the sublime, the primitive, and the national past; it also sparked enduring debates about authenticity and the scottish gaelic tradition itself. Read today, the poems remain a powerful meeting-place of myth and modern sensibility, where ancient gaelic warriors are remembered with tenderness as well as awe. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
