The title character is the embodiment of a certain type of intellectual: fearful, self-absorbed, suspicious, and utterly ordinary. Through him, Xiao Hong paints a portrait of a generation that stood on the sidelines of history, paralyzed by its own anxieties. This novel reveals a different side of Xiao Hong - her sharp wit, her comic timing, her gift for satire - and stands proudly alongside Tales of Hulan River as one of her greatest achievements.¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿Xiao Hong (1911-1942), born Zhang Naiying and known by the pen names Qiaoyin, Lingling, Tiandi, and others, was a modern Chinese woman writer whose short but brilliant literary career left an indelible mark on Chinese literature.
