Over dit product

No country on earth grows more varieties of wine grape than Italy, and few have a more tangled relationship with what those grapes become. Ask a Frenchman what wine his country makes and he will likely name a region — Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône — because French wine culture has organized itself, for centuries, around place. Ask an Italian the same question and the answer fractures almost immediately into grape, hillside, family, and village, because Italian wine was never built by a single logic. It grew the way the country itself grew: as a patchwork of independent regions, each with its own soil, its own dialect, and its own idea of what a good glass of wine should taste like. This is both the glory and the difficulty of Italian wine. There is no single Italian wine tradition to learn, in the way one might learn the five First Growths of Bordeaux or the grand cru ladder of Burgundy. There are, instead, twenty regions, well over five hundred officially recognized grape varieties, and a classification system that can seem, to the newcomer, more like a puzzle than a guide. And yet underneath that apparent chaos lies something remarkably coherent: a set of native grapes, deeply tied to specific places, that together tell the story of Italian geography, history, and taste more completely than almost any other cultural artifact the country has produced. Guido Valli, curating this volume for La Nuova Luce Edizioni, has spent a career moving between vineyards, cellars and enoteche across the peninsula, and this book reflects that movement. It does not attempt to catalogue every one of Italy's grapes or appellations — no single volume reasonably could — but instead aims to give the curious drinker a working map: the history that shaped Italian wine, the handful of grape…
