That Sunday by the SGR Tracks

What if one missed train offered the rarest gift—a day entirely your own? On a languid Sunday in Nairobi, two strangers discover the beauty of a life briefly unplanned. Aisha Mwacharo is headed toward a future mapped by tradition and expectation—until she misses her SGR train at Syokimau Station. Forced into an unexpected pause, she meets Kimani, a soft-spoken guitarist and storyteller whose rhythm matches the city’s slow, hidden pulse. With hours to fill and nowhere urgent to be, Aisha follows Kimani through the city’s unsung corners: a bustling matatu ride, the quiet nostalgia of the Railway Museum, sun-drenched gardens, and a secret jazz speakeasy alive with possibility. As they wander Nairobi’s streets, what unfolds is not a grand romance or a life-altering decision, but a gentle reckoning with the quiet questions that shape us all. In conversation and stillness, laughter and silence, Aisha and Kimani find space to remember old dreams, question silent compromises, and notice the quiet magic of being fully present—even if just for a day. Perfect for readers of contemporary African fiction, subtle love stories, and anyone who’s ever longed for a day out of time.
