More Than a Threshold: Portals as a Function of Character Transformation in Fiction

More than a Threshold is an informative guide for writers who want to know what to consider when including a portal in their work and tips on how to do so in relation to the kind of transformation their character(s) will experience. This writer's craft essay originated from Heather Sanderson's master level thesis at Harvard University's Extension School. In it, she examines three different kinds of portals in three works: The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, She Never Told Me About the Ocean by Elisabeth Sharp McKetta, and "Bluebeard's Egg" by Margaret Atwood. From looking closely at these two novels and short story, Sanderson offers specific examples of what is needed to fully incorporate a portal into your writing and discusses why you might want to.
