Following the turning of the seasons and the rhythm of China's traditional solar terms, the author turns the humblest ingredients into writing to be read, savoured and remembered. The essays travel from table to table across the land: lotus root, crab and mooncake in the south; Dongguan's lycheewood roast goose, the Chang'an "bigbowl" feast, spring bamboo shoots and lychees with a thousandyear history; Sichuan's colddressed chicken and spicy sausage; the Hakka New Year's Eve dinner, fried glutinous dumplings and the "Dragon Raises Its Head" banquet of western Guangdong; and spring tea, kapok blossoms, wild mountain greens, and the pot of jasmine tea shared with a father.
