Success, to me, is pegged on the 6 C’s; clarity, commitment, courage, confidence, chance, and change. If your goals are set clearly and without any contradictions, you have a better chance at succeeding than someone whose goals are not clear. Once you have established clear goals, you must commit to do whatever is necessary to follow through to fruition. Commitment is the mother of success. Your commitment must be accompanied by courage. Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” You must gather your courage to move forward even in the face of adversity. By extension, your courage must be shielded by your confidence that whatever happens and even when success is not guaranteed, you have the confidence and the ability to move forward. Self-confidence stirs away criticism and enables one pick up the pieces and move on. Arthur Ashe was right when he said, “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.” Confidence and clarity when combined become a strong force for success, but preparation for success is moot if there is no risk taking. Man, by nature is wired to take chances. When you are prepared for whatever comes your way, you must take risks to attain your goals. Your desire for success must be so strong that you take calculated risks. Helen Keller, one of the greatest personalities to ever overcome her handicap, once said, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” Success demands the former and abhors the later. Clarity, commitment, courage, confidence, and chance must work in tandem with change. Success essentially is change in the status quo.
