John Greenleaf Whittier

"John Greenleaf Whittier" is a detailed biographical study of the renowned American Quaker poet and dedicated abolitionist. Penned by Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a fellow reformer and contemporary, this work provides a deep exploration of Whittier's life, tracing his journey from a rural Massachusetts upbringing to his status as a pivotal figure in the anti-slavery movement and a respected member of the fireside poets. The biography examines the vital connection between Whittier's moral convictions and his literary output. Higginson offers critical analysis of his most significant works, including "Snow-Bound", while highlighting how his Quaker faith influenced his tireless advocacy for social justice and human rights. By contextualizing Whittier within the turbulent political and social landscape of 19th-century America, the author provides readers with an intimate look at the man who used his verse as both a tool for political change and a celebration of New England life.
