Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities

A Cockney grocer with money and no seat rides to hounds across three counties, and every field he crosses belongs to somebody who wishes he would not. Surtees hunted all his life and wrote about it without a trace of reverence; Jorrocks was popular enough that Dickens's publishers asked for something similar, and got The Pickwick Papers. Thirty-five plates of hunting, shooting and open country by painters including Francis Grant and John Middleton follow the text, matching Surtees's world of horses, fields and the people who own them.
