Clementine Homilies

Have you ever wondered why the earliest days of Christianity were defined not just by faith, but by intense philosophical battles and intellectual debates? The Clementine Homilies offers a compelling modern translation of one of the most intriguing and philosophically dense texts of the ancient Christian world. Attributed to Clement of Rome, this rich collection of twenty discourses (or homilies) serves as a companion text to the Clementine Recognitions, delving even deeper into the fierce theological disputes of the early church. At the core of this monumental work is the ideological rivalry between the Apostle Peter and Simon Magus, a Samaritan sorcerer who claims to possess divine power and twists scripture to his own ends. As Clement travels with Peter, he documents their legendary encounters across the ancient Mediterranean. Through these dramatic public debates, the text tackles profound ancient mysteries: the problem of evil, the necessity of human free will, the true nature of prophecy, and the intricate relationship between Judaism and early Christianity.Far more than a simple historical record, The Clementine Homilies is a treasure trove of Jewish-Christian esoteric thought. It portrays a vision of faith where reason and divine revelation go hand in hand, and where the teachings of Jesus are deeply harmonized with the ancient Law of Moses. What You Will Discover in This Modern Translation:The Apostolic Debates Witness the Apostle Peter's masterful dismantling of Simon Magus's deceptive magic and fatalistic philosophy.Jewish-Christian Philosophy Explore a unique branch of early Christian thought that heavily emphasizes the continuity of divine revelation from the Old Testament to the New.The Nature of God and Evil Delve into ancient arguments regarding monotheism,…
