Selected Works of Xiao Hong

Presented in its original, unadulterated form, this edition faithfully reproduces the author's first drafts, preserving the authentic texture and spirit of Xiao Hong's writing.¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿The Field of Life and Death brings together Xiao Hong's groundbreaking debut novel and other memorable works, including The Bridge, Vague Hopes, and Cries from the Wilderness. The title novel, set in a village outside Harbin, tells the stories of peasants like Zhao San and Erbanc in the years surrounding the September 18th Incident - a time of Japanese invasion and growing resistance. There is Jinzhi, pregnant and unmarried; Zhao San, who tries to fight his landlord's rent hikes but ends up beating a thief by mistake; and Wang Po, who drinks poison after her son dies. In spare, unflinching prose, Xiao Hong portrays the lives of northern peasants trapped in a cycle of blind reproduction and mindless death - a people who live like animals, and die like them too.¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿......¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿Xiao Hong (1911-1942), born Zhang Naiying and known by the pen names Qiaoyin, Lingling, Tiandi, and others, was a modern Chinese woman writer whose short but brilliant literary career left an indelible mark on Chinese literature.
