Playing The Game: Stories from the touchline

Who would win a penalty shoot-out between an elephant and the captain of Aylesbury United? Playing the Game reveals the answer - just one of the astonishing stories from the football club's early history, from its foundation in 1897 to the post-war years. For the first time author Mike Snell divulges the fascinating tales behind the players, the matches, the rivalries, and the trophies, as football fever started to sweep the country and the game became part of the national consciousness. Learn the circumstances and characters behind Aylesbury United's formation, the team that delivered the club's first silverware, the players that never returned from the two World Wars, as well as the two brothers who came to England to escape the holocaust and went on to represent both the Ducks and the USA as internationals - and much more. This book also includes individual player and team statistics from formation to the start of the Second World War.
