The Burden Road 2 - The Saltway Contract

Months after the Vale family exposed the inherited Burden inside Mercy Freight, a sealed conservation shipment reaches Oakland with salt blooming across dry steel. No one in the Black Gulf Coast community it came from authorized the move. The contract assigns loss, displacement, restoration, and every disaster still to come to Cypress Bell—its survivors, its descendants, and people not yet born.Attorney Nia Vale believes the accountability model built in Oakland can stop the transfer. Her mother, Odessa, recognizes the contract and knows the trip south will uncover a promise she and Elias broke during a 2008 emergency. The road to Cypress Bell refuses to stay on the map. Lane markings crust with salt. Dry houses hold the pressure of deep water. Doorways open into furnished rooms beneath the surface. But Cypress Bell is not a ruin waiting to be saved. Residents and descendants want different futures: restoration, relocation, protected graves, clean water, secure work, direct compensation, or the right to leave unsafe ground dead.As lives from Reconstruction, wartime Oakland, the civil-rights era, and the 2008 Gulf crisis break through the present, Nia must decide whether proving who signed the contract gives her the right to say what repair should mean. Odessa must finally name what one family's survival cost other families when she chose to fix the damage later.Set between Oakland and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, *The Saltway Contract* is adult Black supernatural horror about mothers and daughters, love under pressure, stolen authority, and a community determined to choose its own future.## Short DescriptionWhen a salt-corroded shipment exposes a contract assigning future disasters to an erased Black Gulf Coast town and its unborn descendants, Nia and Odessa Vale follow a…
