ALTNEULAND - The Old New Land

Two remarkable works by Theodor Herzl brought together in one volume. In Altneuland: The Old New Land, the disillusioned Viennese lawyer Friedrich Loewenberg leaves civilization behind with the enigmatic Kingscourt. Twenty years later, the two men return to the world and discover a profoundly transformed Palestine-a land of flourishing cities, technological progress, social cooperation, religious tolerance, and renewed hope. Published in 1902, Herzl's visionary novel presents not merely a political program, but an imaginative portrait of what determination, knowledge, and collective effort might accomplish. The New Ghetto: A Play in Four Acts takes the reader back to the social tensions of late nineteenth-century Vienna. Through the tragic story of Jacob Samuel, an assimilated Jewish lawyer, Herzl exposes the invisible barriers that remained after legal emancipation. The old walls may have disappeared, but prejudice, exclusion, conflicting loyalties, and the struggle for dignity have created a new kind of ghetto.Read together, these works illuminate two sides of Herzl's thought. The New Ghetto diagnoses the confinement and insecurity of Jewish life in Europe; Altneuland imagines a future beyond that confinement. One portrays the crisis; the other offers the dream. This special edition brings together Herzl the dramatist and Herzl the visionary, offering readers a powerful literary introduction to the origins, dilemmas, and aspirations of modern political Zionism.
