À propos de ce produit
In 1896, Menelik II's army defeated an invading Italian force at Adwa, preserving Ethiopia's independence and making the emperor an enduring symbol of African resistance. Yet the power that won at Adwa had also been forged through conquest within Africa—through war, tribute, land reordering, diplomacy, weapons purchases, and systems that included slavery. From a childhood shaped by captivity to the throne of Shewa, from the disputed Treaty of Wuchale to the battlefield of Adwa and the succession crisis that followed his collapse, this biography traces the choices by which Menelik enlarged and defended a state. Empress Taytu, regional rulers, soldiers, diplomats, and conquered communities remain actors in the story rather than scenery around one ruler. Drawing on court chronicles, diplomatic records, contemporary testimony, and modern scholarship, Menelik II avoids both heroic legend and retrospective caricature. It asks how a ruler could resist a colonial empire from abroad while constructing an empire at home—and what that contradiction cost the people who lived inside it.
