Island of Dreams

Island of Dreams: Environmental Crisis in Japan, the classic work that explores Japan's tragic environmental crisis, is back in print to celebrate the book's Fiftieth Anniversary since it was first published in 1975. This edition includes a new preface by the authors to show the relevance of Japan's past experiences with environmental pollution to today's global crisis. The book describes the human consequences of Minamata disease, PCB poisoning, and Japan's other industrial pollution catastrophes. This is the compelling story of pollution victims who united with concerned citizens to demand corporate redress and government policy changes. Island of Dreams provides lessons for us all about Japanese society and about the struggle for environmental protection in general.Authors Norie Huddle and Michael Reich write in their new preface, "As we republish Island of Dreams in this 50th Anniversary Edition, we invite readers to remember Japan's environmental crises of the past and reflect on the global implications of these stories. We hope that making Island of Dreams available again will offer readers valuable insights to help us come together and protect our global environment into the future."
