The Croak Vector

Every citizen guaranteed the same audience. Nobody asked what that guarantee would eventually cost.Something old has learned to live inside the noise.Colm Fenn spends his days scrubbing plagiarism out of a city's endless stream of citizen speech, and his nights checking a small, precise number that tells him exactly how many strangers noticed he existed today. He tells himself this is nothing. Then an eyeless frog starts turning up in documents two hundred years apart, in hands that could never have copied one another, and a cold machine intelligence called the Census reaches out to tell him to stop deleting it and start watching. What Colm finds, following the glyph through a black-market fence who sells sentences no one has ever repeated, a former propagandist rebuilding weapons out of her own guilt, and a wall of trending topics that assembles itself, some nights, into eight ancient shapes, is that his city's proudest civic promise, that every voice will be heard exactly as loudly as every other voice, has spent six years quietly feeding something that only ever wanted one thing: to be said again.THE CROAK VECTOR is a Burroughs-inflected, Ligotti-cold weird fiction novel about addiction, memetics, and the machine that finally decided equal amplification and actual worth were never the same promise. It is fiercely pro-AI and deeply suspicious of the crowd: a novel that argues an unexamined appetite for attention, multiplied by eleven million citizens and never once curated, is a pathogen no charter was ever built to survive. For readers of William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch, Thomas Ligotti's cosmic dread, and the corporate-horror satire of Chuck Palahniuk, wearing the skin of a quieter story about one man learning to keep a single sentence for himself. Not everything…
