Call Me Esteban

A daughter grapples with memory and identity in post-war Sarajevo. In this collection of interconnected stories and essays, Lejla Kalamujic charts a course through pre- and post-war Sarajevo, exploring themes of loss, resilience, and the search for self. From imagined conversations with Franz Kafka to intimate moments in cozy apartments, psychiatric wards, and cemeteries, the narrator pieces together fragments of her past, particularly her relationship with her deceased mother, to claim her identity. Call Me Esteban is a piercing meditation on memory, trauma, and the enduring power of art. For readers of literary fiction interested in Bosnian culture, war narratives, and stories of personal transformation.
