The Modern Accountant

Stop working in your firm. Start designing it.Most accounting practices don't stall because the work is bad. They stall because the owner is the system - reviewing every file, answering every email, carrying every deadline. Revenue climbs, hours climb, and profit stays exactly where it was. The Modern Accountant is a practical blueprint for CPAs, bookkeepers, tax preparers, and firm owners who are ready to trade billable-hour survival for a practice that runs on systems, technology, and advisory value. Drawing on two decades of building accounting and financial technology companies, Carlos J. Martinez translates the hard-won lessons of business design into an accounting-specific playbook - and shows you how to move from technician to architect. Inside, you will learn how to: - Escape the Technician's Trap that keeps skilled accountants stuck doing instead of designing- Replace repetitive labor with automation and AI that works like invisible staff- Build an integrated tech stack - and measure the real ROI of every tool before you buy it- Shift from compliance work to high-margin advisory, and lead the client conversations that justify the fee- Document workflows for onboarding, monthly close, and tax season so quality survives delegation- Hire and train a team that thinks in systems instead of waiting for instructions- Track the handful of KPIs that actually run a firm, and ignore the rest- Price for value instead of hours, using tiered and subscription models clients say yes to- Own a niche, build a referral ecosystem, and create a brand that commands premium fees- Engineer transferable value so your practice is sellable, inheritable, and independent of youEvery chapter closes with a clear takeaway and a concrete action step you can complete this week.
