A New Round of Old Area Renovation

Integrating and enhancing sociocultural dimensions in urban renewal and transformation.¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿The "Shanghai Master Plan (2017-2035)" explicitly states that Shanghai should be built into "an outstanding global city, a socialist modern international metropolis with global influence," and that it must firmly grasp the two cornerstones of high-quality development and high-quality living, while making greater efforts in the meticulous implementation of the plan. Since 2001, Shanghai has been advancing a new round of redevelopment targeting areas with substandard "second-class old lane" housing. With the shift in 2017 of Shanghai's urban construction approach from "demolition, retention, and renovation" to "retention, renovation, and demolition," the city has been comprehensively promoting a new phase of old area redevelopment, accelerating efforts to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged residents in substandard second-class old lane housing in the central urban areas. In July 2022, the redevelopment of Plot 68 and the eastern part of Plot 67 on Jianguo East Road in Huangpu District took effect, marking Shanghai's full completion of the redevelopment of contiguous substandard second-class old lane housing and the transition into the stage of addressing "two types of old housing and one type of village."
