South Africa 4 - Across the Karoo

Across the Karoo: The Great Interior follows a journey aboard the legendary Rovos Rail from Cape Town to Pretoria through the vast interior of South Africa. Moving slowly through the winelands, the Karoo, Kimberley, and the great railway landscapes of Southern Africa, the book explores not only luxury rail travel, but the emotional effect of movement, distance, silence, and observation in a modern world increasingly hostile to slowness. Part travel memoir, part meditation on railways, landscape, and memory, Across the Karoo captures the atmosphere of old-world train travel through one of the most extraordinary interiors on earth. Written in a restrained literary style, the book reflects on Africa, safari culture, the romance of the rails, and the temporary worlds created aboard great trains.
