Star Memories

Step into the world of Sulawesi, where the sea and stars guide destinies and the tides of history shape the lives of ordinary people. Star Memories is a sweeping, multi-generational novel that follows Punggawa, a commoner-turned-leader, and his son Wellang as they navigate the storms of colonial oppression, war, and revolution from the 1930s to the 1960s. Against the backdrop of Dutch and Japanese occupation, political upheaval, and the struggle for Indonesian independence, their journey is woven with the wisdom and traditions of the Bajo and Bugis sea peoples—masters of celestial navigation and keepers of ancient beliefs. As Punggawa and his companions fight for dignity and survival, they are caught between loyalty to their ancestors and the relentless demands of a changing world. Through rebellion, exile, and the search for a decent life, their stories reveal the resilience of a community bound by the ocean, the stars, and the hope for a better future. Rich in indigenous lore, oral storytelling, and the rhythms of island life, Star Memories is a luminous tale of courage, loss, and the enduring power of memory. Discover a hidden chapter of Indonesian history—where every star has a story, and every journey begins with a longing for home.
