À propos de ce produit

There is a story about Reconstruction most people already know: freedom came, then it was taken back. That story is true at the scale of a nation. But zoom into one place where it actually happened, and it gets more complicated, and more interesting. Beaufort County, South Carolina, became something close to a laboratory for what freedom might look like when the old order collapsed first and hardest there, years before the rest of the Confederacy. Freedpeople here bought land at auction, sometimes the very ground they had once worked in bondage. They built their own schools before public education existed almost anywhere else for Black children in the South. They joined the first regiment of formerly enslaved soldiers the Union Army ever raised. And in a county where Black residents outnumbered white residents eight to one, they built one of the only sustained, functioning examples of Black political power the Reconstruction South ever produced, one that outlasted almost every other county's by decades. This is narrative nonfiction history told at ground level: specific people, specific land, specific votes, rather than a compressed national timeline. It doesn't resolve into a tidy ending, because the real history didn't. It holds triumph and betrayal in the same rooms, sometimes the same year, because that's what actually happened. Read it for the story of one county that shows what Reconstruction was capable of, and what it actually took to defend it.
